Earthquake: L’Aquila inhabitants protest in Rome and get beat up

A significant number of citizens coming from the city of L’Aquila and led by the mayor Massimo Cialente (around 5,000 people) arrived in Rome yesterday to protest against the government politics for the situation they are still facing in Abruzzo after the ruinous earthquake that stroke the city and its surroundings on April the 6th 2009.

Oldest surviving portraits of Apostles discovered in catacombs of St Thecla

The Corriere published today an article about the niche of the Apostles. The fourth-century paintings, the earliest surviving icons of the apostles, were discovered in a two metre-long niche in the catacombs of St Thecla in Rome’s Via Silvio D’Amico, near Via Ostiense and not far from the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le mura.

Ansa reported yesterday that two priests, two dancers and a team of young actors are bringing John Paul II to the stage this month, with a musical version of the pope’s life and work. The musical maps out the key developments in the life of Karol Wojtyla, who led the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005, through acting, dance, music and singing.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom (PdL) party, has been excluded from the ballot in Rome province for the March 28-29 elections, because the electoral office said the centre right party had failed to hand in its list of candidates by the noon cutoff on Saturday.

Former pilot Zanardi will take part in Rome Marathon

Former Formula 1 pilot, Alex Zanardi, who lost both legs in a terrible car-crash, will take part in this year’s Rome Marathon next March 21st. Zanardi, who last year Zanardi won the Venice Marathon for disabled in a wheelchair, is 43 years old and will compete in a handcycle, sponsored by the Barilla foods group, similar to the one he used in the 2007 New York Marathon, where he came in fourth for his division after just four weeks of training.

Alcoa workers stage a sit-in to defend their jobs

Unemployment rate in Italy rose to 8.5% last December. So again, after Termini Imerese, we keep on talking of the fundamental “job issue”. Yesterday afternoon about 400 Alcoa workers staged a sit-in in Rome, in front of Berlusconi’s office in Montecitorio, during a meeting between the American multinational of aluminium, trade unions and the Italian government.

Preferably blond, slim, attractive, tall not less than 1,70 mt, size 42, black dressed, no miniskirts or plunging necklines and with at least a 7cm heel. These were the requests for 200 girls paid 60 euros to take part to the religious lessons about the Koran taught by Colonel Gheddafi during his Roman staying.

In Rome, three penitentiary officers and three inmates are the first 6 people accused of manslaughter for the death of Stefano Cucchi, a 31-year-old that passed away last 22nd of October after being arrested (7 days before) for detention of some grams of marijuana and cocaine.
